Career Managers Will You Walk With Me Tomorrow
Career Managers Will You Walk With Me Tomorrow You may have heard my calf news last year I ripped my calf muscle on a beautiful Monday afternoon playing out on a field. A week of limping and hobbling followed, then, in a desparate attempt to help one of my kids get something hot out of the microwave, I jumped and RIPPED it again, much worse. The doctor guessed that I might have ripped it more than 60%. YUCK (and OUCH). I spent 6 weeks on the couch, which was like being in jail. For the previous 3+ years I had not done much physical stuff and my body was not doing so well. Crutches hurt worse than I thought they could, my joints hurt, etc. Sometime around December of last year I decided I wanted to walk 500 miles this year. Walk, not run. I figured that would be about 498 miles more than I walked in 2009. 500 seemed like a good goal more than a mile a day but nothing too crazy. I started January 2nd and walked 3.1 miles. In the last 6 months Ive continued to walk. I took about 40 days off a few weeks ago because (a) the weather turned cold again, and I thought I was done walking in the cold/snow, and (b) I got sick, and wanted to get my health back. It was hard to get back into it hence, the 40 days :p Tomorrow, though, I will hit the 1/2 way milestone: 250 miles. Im 2.9 miles shy of it and Ill do it tomorrow morning. Id like to invite you to walk with me. If you want to come to my house and do it, thats cool! But many of you cant do that on such short notice ?? Just make your own 3 mile loop and walk it with me. As I get older I realize the importance of taking care of my body, which requires a lifestyle change. I dont think Ill ever run (not really any interest), but Ive seen amazing results in how I feel, my joints, even my waistline, from simply walking a few miles every week. Is it inconvenient? Yeah, a lot of times it is. But the alternative is NO FUN. Ive been there, done that. Tomorrow, 7am three miles. See ya there! How Recruiters Can Survive and Thrive During the Summer Slump
How Recruiters Can Survive and Thrive During the Summer Slump With summer holidays fast approaching (I use the term very loosely given there are grey, foreboding clouds in the Lancashire sky, as I write this in June, with a cardigan and fluffy slippers on) I wonder how many recruiters are thinking ahead of how to ensure their desks donât collapse whilst they enjoy their well earned time off. Whilst holidays are part and parcel of every day life, the summer poses itâs own challenges with long school holidays, (with some schools off for 6-8 weeks), thus creating potential issues for working parents in particular, and also the colleagues who are sometimes left âholding the babyâ in their absence! How do recruiters ensure they remain successful throughout the year, without creating a âtroughâ of activity and subsequent income, yet still manage to enjoy their fortnight in the sun and not risk returning to zero. Here are a few tips: The direct approach In the run up to your holiday, for the activity that is occurring beforehand and will run over this into your holiday time, facilitate a communication to allow your clients and candidates to have each others mobiles and emails so that they can continue to have a dialogue in your absence. Incentivise your team Your employer may already adopt a split fee scheme on candidate ownership, however, perhaps you can negotiate with a colleague to âproxyâ manage your activity for a split of the fees. Or alternatively, you could offer a reciprocal arrangement when they take their holiday pro forma. Either way, choose a trusted colleague you know will maintain your professional approach to ensure parity for your clients. Boost your activity In the weeks before your planned absence, create more activity and opportunity for revenue by working harder and longer. It is simple economics. And whilst I am huge advocate for flexible working, in the run up to my (frequent holidays) I definitely create a crescendo of activity in the days leading up to my time away. Speak to people honestly Talk to your employer and explain what support you need in anticipation of your vacation and how they can assist you further. Can a resourcer shadow you for the week or so before you go to take over instead? Equally, speak to your clients and ask them to pre empt any potential issues so you can manage them accordingly. For working parents There are additional challenges facing working parents especially those of school age as you face the arduous task of finding suitable clubs and activities potentially for 4 weeks out of the 6. Prebook your childcare in advance and ensure a calendar of availability to alleviate the guilt. Some holidays I have had no full cover so I work 7-1030am and then 4-7pm so I can get the kids involved in a home based activity and then enjoy something fun with them during the alternate hours. Honesty is the best policy I have always been very proud that I am lucky enough to work around the school holidays and I know I am not the norm. However, I have always encouraged clients and candidates to be totally open and honest. Therefore, donât shy away from your pending absence- use it as a reason to steer faster processes and facilitate decisions before you go! Book your diary up I have always ensured that I have a busy diary for when I return from any holiday- definitely not the first day back obviously, but certainly by day 3 you should get yourself back out in front of your clients and candidates to get yourself âback in itâ. Confirm everyone when you arrive back from your hols the night before you return so you can focus on answering those 765 emails and missed calls Remember, a holiday is a chance for you to rest, relax, bunjee jump, taste exotic foods, ski down a slope, visit a Roman ruin, lie on a foreign beach- whatever your choice of location, it is an essential time to remove yourself from the daily constraints of work, the constant pace of recruitment. Take your holiday allowance- use it to relax and chill out with your loved ones. Reflect, make plans, tick off bucket lists. Try not to think about work and donât log on or check your messages unless you absolutely have to. Whatever and wherever you go this summer, stay safe and enjoy. Image: Shutterstock

5 Ways to Look Great While You Work
5 Ways to Look Great While You Work It can be really difficult to look great while you work every day, over and over. Especially when you have so many other things on your mind. Thinking about the day ahead can get in the way and you can end up wearing the same old thing, day in day out. This is not good for your work performance or your mood because its unlikely that you will feel at your best. The good news is that its easier than you might think to look great while you work. Here is some inspiration that should help you to make this happen. Be stylish with workwear choices Being required to wear specific items when you work does not mean that you cannot be stylish. Even if your occupation has a specific expected image. For instance, when you look at the aprons designed by Chef Works, you can see that they have clean straight lines that reflect a modern image, as well as offering the protection that is needed in commercial kitchens or restaurants. This is an excellent example of workwear that can enhance your appearance. Dispose of the old One of the biggest problems with the clothes that people wear for work is that often they are not given as much attention as social wear. If this applies in your case, you need to be ruthless and rid your wardrobe of any items that you are wearing out of habit but which have seen better days. Its time to change up your work day wardrobe. If the clothing that you are getting rid of is still in good condition, you may want to consider donating it to charity rather than simply throwing it away. This recycling does not just help the charity in question, its also good for the planet. Make the most of accessories If you work in an office environment where too much clothing creativity is frowned upon, accessorizing cleverly is a good option. It helps you to add splashes of colour to a basic skirt and top combination. Using items such as patterned scarves, also helps you to recreate outfits on a regular basis. Get advice from someone you trust Chances are that you would not by an outfit for an important social event without getting a second opinion. So, why not apply this to work wear as well. Take a friend with you when you go shopping and get their advice about the choices that you are making. You never know, they may even come up with a suggestion that you would not have thought of yourself. Do not leave your outfit choice until the last minute Its never a good idea, to randomly select clothes to wear for work at the last minute. If you choose to do this, there is a good chance that you will run out of time to make the best possible decision. Its a far better idea to take some time out the evening before, to search for your wardrobe and find an outfit that will make you look and feel great. This advice should give you the inspiration you need to change your normal routine and give your work clothes the same attention that you give to your social wardrobe. Youll look great while you work and feel good, too!

7 Tips for Running a Home-Based Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
7 Tips for Running a Home-Based Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Running a home-based business comes with many benefits, like flexibility, the ability to create your own schedule and even tax breaks. These benefits are hard to beat, but it can be difficult to grow your home-based business. However, being home-based doesnât mean âstaying smallâ or limiting your opportunities. In fact, some of the most well-known companies in the world â" like Apple, Hersheyâs and Ford Motor Company â" started as home-based businesses. Furthermore, 69% of entrepreneurs start their businesses out of their homes. If you have big aspirations and are looking for ways to turn your great idea into a tangible business model thatâs run out of your home, you need a plan. Consider the following tips for starting and running a home-based business: Evaluate Your Space Running a business out of your home doesnât mean your home is an ideal location. It might be, but you might need to adjust. Think about your current living space and compare it with the business model you have in mind. If you need to be able to meet with customers or employees, can you comfortably make that happen in your home? Are you easy to find? Do you have adequate parking? Additionally, look into whether zoning and permit laws in your current location prohibit business or certain types of business. If there are any hold-ups during this evaluation, moving to a home thatâs more suited for running a business and living comfortably at the same time might be a good first step. Stock Up and Set Up Once youâre sure your home is ready for business, itâs time to focus in on your actual office space. First, be sure you have a dedicated area thatâs appropriate for doing business. Your home may be equipped with an office. If not, consider portioning off a specific area of a larger room, turning a large closet into an office or even weatherproofing to convert a garage into your dream office. Also, think about the supplies youâll need to do business. Everything from furniture to offices supplies should be considered as you budget your start-up expenses. Examine what youâll need going forward and look for ways to save. Services like Amazonâs Subscribe and Save allow business owners to save certain percentages on ongoing purchases, which could free up a considerable amount of money in the long-run. While stocking up, consider your brand. Personal branding is just as important for home-based businesses as it is for large corporations. Look at investing in marketing materials that carry your logo and creating a website that does the same. Consult with a designer if youâre unsure of where to start. Set a Schedule You may be dreaming about the flexibility youâll soon have at your fingertips, but if your business is going to be profitable, it will require work. To set your schedule, consider: How many hours per day youâll need to get your business off and running. What your current schedule looks like â" what can you reorganize, and what will you need to plan around? When you work best. Are you a morning person or a night owl? When are you most efficient and focused? For most adults, the answer to this question is during the late morning. Plan to work during your most productive hours. When your customers and business partners are available. If you work best at midnight, but you need to be able to contact customers or key business partners during normal working hours, it may be difficult. Once youâve considered all of the important factors listed above, create an actual schedule. Mark it on your calendar and share it with your family and friends. Understanding that youâre actually working, even though youâre at home, is beneficial for everyone. Get Your Books Straight from Day One Hereâs the thing. Running a business out of your home comes with many tax benefits. However, there are still penalties for failing to comply with tax laws and failing to report proper income levels. To avoid this, consider investing in comprehensive tax software from the beginning stages of your business to keep your books straight, or start working with a tax accountant. Ensuring your operations are in concordance with IRS regulations will protect your business in the future. Consult With a Business Attorney Just like IRS regulations, there are many laws that apply to home-based businesses. This is especially true if youâll be using contractors or hiring employees. One misstep or oversight could ruin your business. Consider searching for a reliable business law attorney in your area and set up a consultation. An attorney can help with: Setting up the proper structure â" LLC, corporation, partnership or another option. Ensuring you have the proper paperwork on file for each employee. Determining whether someone should be considered a contractor or employee. Asking the right questions and providing input to ensure you move forward according to the law. Keep Your Personal Life Separate When you work from an actual office space, itâs easy to leave work at work. You may think about it after hours, but everything you need to do your job is at the office. When you work from home, itâs much easier to blur that line. Remember that you have a set schedule. Things may come up unexpectedly, but try to find a way to stay away from your office space when youâre not working. This is critical for your mental health and happiness â" and that of your family, too. Create a Network When you work from home, you likely spend most of your time on your own. This can lead to negative emotional and psychological consequences, especially for entrepreneurs who thrive on being out and around others. To combat this, consider looking into local, professional organizations. Find something up your alley and go to a meeting. If itâs a good fit, become a member. Make an effort to attend social events to learn more about your industry and to connect with people in the field. This might provide the social energy you need to thrive, and itâs another important aspect of creating a personal brand thatâs recognized by others. Running a home-based business is an exciting prospect, but itâs going to need some work. To ensure you get started on the right foot and prosper going forward, consider the seven tips above and jump in. Big things could be right around the corner.

5 Ways Positive Thinking Makes Us Miserable at Work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
5 Ways Positive Thinking Makes Us Miserable at Work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog One German IT company?has come up with the perfect solution to whining in the workplace ? it?s made cheerfulness a contractual obligation. What?s more, the CEO?has declared that those who don?t measure up to the prescribed level of jollity in the morning should stay at home until they cheer up. The idea of positive thinking (and therefore banning negativity) is not new, but is affecting us now more than ever at home and at work. And ironically, its effects are mostly negative. Yes, forced positive thinking makes us less happy. Positive thinking is a poorly defined concept which at its most extreme says, that in every situation you can choose your own mood and your own reactions. No matter what happens to you, you can always choose a positive attitude. Fake it till you make it, they say, claiming that faking happiness actually makes you happier. Basically,?if you dont feel happy every moment of your life, its just your own damn fault for not trying hard enough. Now, this idea is not completely unfounded. In many situations, you can actually change your mood and outlook through conscious effort. Lets say youre stuck in traffic on your way to work. In?a situation like that you can probably?change your mindset and switch from being annoyed about the delay to a more positive interpretation of the situation. Great, I have more time to listen to this interesting?radio program, or whatever. Nothing wrong with that. But?the most fanatic proponents of positive thinking (especially fans of?The Secret?and similar pseudo-scientific nonsense) go much further.?They claim?that you can always change your thinking?in any situation, and that external circumstances dont matter. No matter what situation youre in, they say, you can simply choose to be happy. Tell that to someone whos seriously ill, whos just been fired?or who is suffering from severe depression. Actually, you should never tell them that, because telling someone in a really rough life situation that they should think more positively is incredibly condescending and a terrible way to trivialize their pain. You could say I positively hate positive thinking :) There is nothing wrong with the milder form of positive thinking,?but the extreme version is bad for you in life and at work. Here are 5 ways?positive thinking screws up our workplaces. 1: Faking emotions at work is stressful German researchers set up an experiment to test what happens, when we force people to fake being happy at work: The team set up a fake railway customer complaints call centre and asked 80 university students to take part in experiments while acting as staff. Half of the group were told that they could verbally defend themselves against rude customers, but the other half has to remain friendly and polite at all times. The volunteers? heart rates were measured and preliminary results showed that the group that was allowed to verbally defend themselves had only a slightly increased heart rate. But the heart rates of the group who stayed polite shot up and continued to beat at a noticeably greater rate long after they had ended their telephone calls. Professor Zapf said, ?Based on previous stress research, we know an increased heart rate can lead to cardiovascular problems and is a clear indicator of a higher psychological workload. It?s about time we did away with the concept that the customer is always right and showed more respect for those in customer service jobs.? ?We call this kind of faked emotion ?emotional dissonance. We found that the amount of time actually spent with customers was irrelevant when measuring stress compared to the amount of time workers had to demonstrate emotional dissonance.? So faking happiness actually makes you less happy and more stressed. 2: Positive thinking makes it even worse for?people who?are unhappy at work According to the extreme version of positive thinking, if youre unhappy at work, youve only got yourself to blame. It may be that your boss is a jerk, your coworkers bully you and the culture is completely toxic you should just have a?positive attitude and make the best of it. So not only are you miserable, but now its all your fault. That makes things even worse. 3: Negative emotions are a natural part of work Heres a story I once shared?from my previous career in IT consulting: I had a big?client in France?who couldnt make up their mind.?In every single meeting, the customer changes the specs for the system. First they want this, then they want that. First they want it this way, then that way. Meanwhile, I?m quietly going crazy. Finally, I lose it in a meeting. They introduce change number 283 (by my loose count), once again going back on what they?ve told me previously, and I snap. I actually pound the table with my fist, snap my folder shut and say through clenched teeth ?No. This can?t go on. This system will never get off the ground if you keep changing your mind at every meeting. We need to make decisions and stick to them?. In this situation I felt AND showed anger a negative emotion.?I couldve forced myself to be positive in that situation, but it would have been a betrayal of my work and myself and it would have felt even worse. Not only was authentic by being angry, that outburst finally got the client to respect me. The thing to remember is that negative emotions are not called that because theyre wrong, but simply because theyre unpleasant. Sometimes a negative emotion is exactly the right emotion and if youre always forcing yourself to be positive youre being both less authentic and less effective. When your circumstances are bad, there is nothing wrong with being unhappy; it is only natural. In fact,?negative emotions tend to drive us to action more than positive ones, so feeling bad about a bad situations helps you do something about?it. 4: Positive thinking can?contribute to quelling dissent and ignoring?problems in the workplace Ever heard someone say In this workplace we dont have problems, only challenges? I hate that phrase with a vengeance, partly because its wrong but mostly because its so often used to stifle dissent and criticism. No workplace is perfect. No job is without problems. ?If we consistently marginalize and criticize people who are unhappy at work by telling them to be positive and never complain, we lose some very valuable voices of reason and realism in the workplace. 5: It doesnt work This excellent article from HBR examines the science behind positive thinking and concludes that: ?across dozens of peer-reviewed studies?examining the effects of positive visions of the future on people pursuing various kinds of wishes ? from health-related, such as losing weight, quitting smoking, or recovering quickly from surgery, to the improvement of professional or academic performance (for example, mid-level managers wishing to reduce job-related stress, graduate students looking for a job, or school children seeking to get good grades) ? we?ve consistently found that?people who positively fantasize make either the same or less progress in achieving attainable wishes than those who don?t. So lets give negativity?it?s central place in the workplace ? as a perfectly natural, even helpful, state of mind. And that, ironically, will lead to more happiness at work! Your take Have you ever felt pressured to be happy at work when you weren?t? What did that do to you? What constructive role do you see negativity?play at work? Write a comment, I?d love to hear your take. A quick note: One thing that often?bugs me is that some people confuse positive thinking?with positive psychology. We base a lot of our work on positive psychology which is the branch?of psychology that studies what makes people thrive and feel happy, where traditional psychology focuses mostly on mental illness. The only thing they have in common is the word positive.
